are in, yours may be a “have now, pay later” society. Immediate
gratification can take precedence over common sense. If everyone
else is doing it, it surely must be right? Wrong. Especially if
the interest rates are too high.

5. You see other people buy new furniture, go on exotic
vacations, or go out to expensive restaurants all the time. Even
if you never know if they are doing so on credit card, you may
want the same. But you do not have the immediate cash, so what
do you do? Jump on the credit card train? That is what your
society may be pushing you towards.

How To Resist the Social Pressures To Succumb To Credit Card
Debt

Due to the overwhelming pressures of the credit card society,
it can be quite a difficult task, initially, to change your own
attitudes. But by asserting your individuality, you can steadily
eliminate the social conditioning. It is really a matter of how
you think in certain situations. You are in charge of the way
you think, so all you need to do is what is natural. Not what
everyone else seems to be doing around you, but what is natural
to you as an individual. Think to protect yourself, assert
yourself, and to look after your financial well being.

Here are a few ideas to help you:

1. Whatever type of loan you may apply for, you are after just
one product, money. Different types of loans are marketed as
separate products, in different packages, but to you, they
should all be one: money. The money, once you have it, is all
the same quality. A dollar is a dollar, a pound is a pound, a
euro is a euro. Having engrained that upon yourself, knowing you
are just after this single product, you need only look at price.
Credit card debt is very, very expensive. The interest takes
money from you, and reduces your assets. If you need a loan, you
want the lowest possible interest rate, one that does not
unnecessarily leech your assets.

2. A credit card should only be used as a convenience to pay if
you have no cash on you, knowing that you can pay off the
balance before interest charges kick in. Many cards have an
interest free period. Never use credit cards as a loan beyond
that free period. Others do, but you have no need to. You can
eliminate that idea altogether. You are creating a new habit
that will enhance your financial situation, and resisting an old
common habit that would ultimately damage your finances.

3. Plan all your borrowing. Sit down and write down what you
absolutely must buy over the next year, and add what you would
like to buy. Total the cost. Write down a budget for each month,
making sure you have listed all your regular expenses that are
fixed and unavoidable, and those over which there is some
flexibility. Compare that total with your income. If you have a
surplus, then you can think about those extra purchases you had
in mind. If not, don’t think any more about them. You cannot
afford them, and cannot afford to borrow.

If you have a planned surplus, then maybe you can get those
things you wanted. If you can afford all of them, and there are
quite a few items on your list, then forget about getting a
loan. Be patient, resist the have now pay later syndrome. You
can save interest and buy a bonus item with that later if you
really must. You are in a great position to pay cash. Prioritize
the things you want to buy, and note their cost, and then work
out a plan by which you buy one item at a time spread throughout
the year. Why pay the banks credit, when you can pay cash? You
will save not just the interest but maybe get cash discounts.
Cash gives you control. With credit you are subservient.

If, on the other hand, there are just one or two more expensive
items you want to buy, it is time to compare options and test
your resolve. If you save your surplus each month, consider how
long it will take to have enough for item 1 and maybe item 2.
Are they really urgent? Probably not. Maybe you can save for one
after 4 months and 2 after 9 months. That way you are getting
into the habit of saving, and living off cash. Cash is king.
Your finances will start to look good over time, and you’ll
start to feel proud of yourself. You will feel in control.

Remember too that by saving, if an emergency comes up, you may
have the cash at hand instead of reaching for that expensive
credit card.

You really cannot wait and save? That is a pity, but now check
out all the loan sources suitable for your intended purchases.
Get the best plan, the best interest rates, and apply, with the
intention of using that loan just for what it is intended, and
to pay it off within the time scale of the spending plan. In the
example one year. Stick to that discipline, and your credit is
still under your control. And, you have avoided reliance on
expensive credit cards.

4. Remind yourself every day that you are only going to use
your credit card when you have no cash on you, as a convenience,
and you will repay it before interest starts to accrue.

5. Also remind yourself every day that sometimes it is good, or
even necessary, to be that bit different, and to resist social
pressures. Imagine all the credit card lemmings heading towards
the precipice, while you relax in your counting house, counting
out your money. Real money; your assets. Anyway, it’s great
sometimes to be different, it really does make you feel good
about yourself.

6. Never, ever feel you have to buy something just because a
neighbour or friend has been boasting about theirs. Envy and
jealousy are viruses that minimize your individuality, and can,
in this case, damage your finances.

Resisting the pressures of the credit card society will be a
lot easier once you have set your mind to it, and started to
feel the benefits. Enjoy the process, and you will be a cash
convert for the rest of your affluent life.

day. The missing credit cards in your purse or wallet become
the biggest concern.

Do you know what to do if this happens to you? Well, you should

All major credit card companies have policies to protect you
from loss or theft. You just need to know how to get their

The first step is to contact your credit card companies to

Fortunately, federal law states that your are only liable for
the first $50.00 of fraudulent charges made to your account.

Negotiate Your Way To Lower Credit Card APR's!

I have three major credit card accounts that I've had for many
years. The other night I was reconciling my monthly statements
and noticed a large discrepancy in the APR's (annual percentage
rate) I was paying on these three accounts.

My first card, card "A", has an APR of 8.9%; card "B" has an
APR of 9.9%; and card "C" has an APR of 17.9% -Ouch ! I knew I
had to see what I could do about this"out of range" interest
rate on card "C". So I considered a couple of options.

One choice would be to transfer or switch the balance on card
"C" to a new card with a lower APR. This would be very easy
to do since I had received several pre-approved credit card
offers earlier in the week. They included "convenience checks"
that I could use to payoff that high APR credit card, thereby
transferring that balance to a new account.

I decided against this option however because I didn't really
want to add another account to my credit profile. Your credit
score, that "magic number" that establishes your
credit-worthiness to merchants can be affected negatively by
having too many accounts.

So instead I decided to contact the issuer of credit card "C"
to see what they could do about that 17.9% APR which seemed so
out of line with my two other credit card accounts. I reasoned
this was the better of the two options before me since I've
already established a relationship with this company; a
relationship which included many years of on-time payments
which reflects positively in my credit profile with the credit
bureaus.

I called the 800 number and talked to a very a nice gentleman.
I explained to him the reason for my call; two other credit card
issuers offered me a much more reasonable interest rate and so
I'd like to see what his company could offer to me.

I wasn't surprised when he replied that he could lower my
current rate from 17.9% to 15.9%. Since the credit card
company makes a profit from the interest rate they charge I
didn't expect to be offered the best or lowest rate right off
the bat. I prepared myself to have to do a little negotiating.

And so I reminded him that my account was in goodstanding and
had been for many years now. I had not made any late payments
and always made more thanthe minimum payment due.

Again he informed me that the best he could offer was a rate of
15.9% that would be good until August 2003. So now not only
was I not feeling like I was getting a very good deal but this
new rate would only be a "promotional" rate !

I remained calm and friendly, knowing that yelling at him or
telling him what a "lousy" company he worked for would be
counterproductive to my end goal - a lower and better APR for
this account. I thaned him for his time but told him I didn't
feel this was a very good offer.

And then the "magic" happened. He asked if I would like to
speak to an account manager and that perhaps they could better
assist me. I thanked him for his time and assistance and was
then transferred to an account manager.

I explained my dilemma to her and reasoned with her that as a
good customer I expected a much better rate. She empathized
with me and then offered to upgrade my account to their
platinum status which carried an APR of 9.9% ! In addition,
the platinum card offered many more benefits and had no annual
fee. She also assured me that this was a "contract rate" and
not a promotional rate. I would keep the same account number
so I would not be opening a "new" account but simply upgrading
my current account status.

Next time you are reconciling your monthly statements take a
close look at the various APR's you are paying. If you notice
a disparity in the rates you are paying, call your card issuers
to negotiate a better rate. My persistence paid off. Be
persistent - it can pay off for you too!

Negotiate Your Way To Lower Credit Card APR's!

I have three major credit card accounts that I've had for many
years. The other night I was reconciling my monthly statements
and noticed a large discrepancy in the APR's (annual percentage
rate) I was paying on these three accounts.

My first card, card "A", has an APR of 8.9%; card "B" has an
APR of 9.9%; and card "C" has an APR of 17.9% -Ouch ! I knew I
had to see what I could do about this"out of range" interest
rate on card "C". So I considered a couple of options.

One choice would be to transfer or switch the balance on card
"C" to a new card with a lower APR. This would be very easy
to do since I had received several pre-approved credit card
offers earlier in the week. They included "convenience checks"
that I could use to payoff that high APR credit card, thereby
transferring that balance to a new account.

I decided against this option however because I didn't really
want to add another account to my credit profile. Your credit
score, that "magic number" that establishes your
credit-worthiness to merchants can be affected negatively by
having too many accounts.

So instead I decided to contact the issuer of credit card "C"
to see what they could do about that 17.9% APR which seemed so
out of line with my two other credit card accounts. I reasoned
this was the better of the two options before me since I've
already established a relationship with this company; a
relationship which included many years of on-time payments
which reflects positively in my credit profile with the credit
bureaus.

I called the 800 number and talked to a very a nice gentleman.
I explained to him the reason for my call; two other credit card
issuers offered me a much more reasonable interest rate and so
I'd like to see what his company could offer to me.

I wasn't surprised when he replied that he could lower my
current rate from 17.9% to 15.9%. Since the credit card
company makes a profit from the interest rate they charge I
didn't expect to be offered the best or lowest rate right off
the bat. I prepared myself to have to do a little negotiating.

And so I reminded him that my account was in goodstanding and
had been for many years now. I had not made any late payments
and always made more thanthe minimum payment due.

Again he informed me that the best he could offer was a rate of
15.9% that would be good until August 2003. So now not only
was I not feeling like I was getting a very good deal but this
new rate would only be a "promotional" rate !

I remained calm and friendly, knowing that yelling at him or
telling him what a "lousy" company he worked for would be
counterproductive to my end goal - a lower and better APR for
this account. I thaned him for his time but told him I didn't
feel this was a very good offer.

And then the "magic" happened. He asked if I would like to
speak to an account manager and that perhaps they could better
assist me. I thanked him for his time and assistance and was
then transferred to an account manager.

I explained my dilemma to her and reasoned with her that as a
good customer I expected a much better rate. She empathized
with me and then offered to upgrade my account to their
platinum status which carried an APR of 9.9% ! In addition,
the platinum card offered many more benefits and had no annual
fee. She also assured me that this was a "contract rate" and
not a promotional rate. I would keep the same account number
so I would not be opening a "new" account but simply upgrading
my current account status.

Next time you are reconciling your monthly statements take a
close look at the various APR's you are paying. If you notice
a disparity in the rates you are paying, call your card issuers
to negotiate a better rate. My persistence paid off. Be
persistent - it can pay off for you too!

Online VoIP Services Fun

Ok we all have heard of Vonage and the other VoIP providers that will give you unlimited Phone services over your broadband connection having your regular old phone. But there are other services that are similar but have a few extra fun options. Let’s cover one of the services I have started playing with voipbuster dot com. Now for legitimate use it is a very good provider and I have enjoyed calling friends all over the world. Now time to cover the dark side to online VoIP providers. One think to think about is where is the provider located (what country). This is important because there are different laws for different countries and if you use the service to harass people (which is really lame) you could find yourself in real trouble. The kind of fun I am talking about is Spoofing Caller ID and also call bridging. This is nothing new but I just want to write a quick paper on it to get the word out. I was informed of VoIPbuster dot com from a friend of mine so a lot of the credit for this paper needs to go out to Toxic from csthis dot com. Now that I have given credit to the person that spiked my interest with this kind of VoIP Phrecking I can get down to business.

Direct or Call Bridging is the act of connecting two PSTN numbers from a 3rd party. Basically this function allows you to use software to call friends by having the VoIP service call your PSTN number 1st and after the call on your phone goes off hook it will auto dial the remote end PSTN number. Since both land line phones where called neither one of the landline phones will be billed for the call. The cool thing is that called ID is sent in both directions from the numbers called so your phone is ringing with your remote numbers caller ID, when you pick the line up the other end starts ringing and they see your caller ID so there is no trace of the 3rd party connection other than the 1st line getting a auto ringing when it goes off hook to the remote line. This service used legitimately is very useful and cool. But if you decide to use this for fun then you can force anyone to call anyone else and they will have no idea what is happening. To the end caller it looks like they are getting called from the other line. This is fun to do when you are around to see their faces of the people you are forcing to call each other.

Now for the dark side if you call someone’s cell phone and keep them online and call it again while spoofing your called ID number to match there cell phone number it should force you into voicemail. The trick here is that some cell providers do not set passwords to voicemail if it is called from it’s own number (even if you are prompted for a password a lot of systems have default passwords that never get changed). Other fun things to do with caller ID are spoofing you outbound ID to show something funny (like “BellSouth”). The idea here is that the sky is the limit since the PSTN is permanently hooked to the internet. I am sure we will see a lot of hacks coming to exploit the fact the internet and phone infrastructure are now merging.

Spoofing Phone Cards is another trick you can use to have fun. Again there are legitimate reasons to have this kind of card. Perhaps you need to call someone to give them an anonymous tip but wanted to make sure you call was not traced (the card provider could still release the call logs to law enforcement). One of the more popular Spoofing card providers is spoofcard dot com. Now with the different spoofing card providers they offer different features like: the ability to change what someone sees on their caller ID display when they receive a phone call, make calls truly private, ability to record calls, web based control panels, and ability to change your voice on the call.

Sniffing VoIP calls is another trick that can be done. Now there are few good reasons for Sniffing VoIP calls like to trouble shoot VoIP routing issues or to record you own calls. Now there is also many bad thing that can come out of sniffing VoIP like the fact if you are on a open WiFi AP other can be recoding your calls and even rerouting them. There are many kinds of sniffer out on the internet free but the only one I trust and endorse would have to be Cain & Able from oxid.it. With Cain & Able you can do a lot of different kinds of Sniffing to include capturing of Passwords, RPD sessions, SSH, Telnet, and VoIP calls. Cain can do a lot more than just that but I recommend going to there site to read more. As everything moves to the internet there will be many helpful advances in the way we live but keep in mind that with every new convenience there are risks associated with it.

Although telephones have been a law firm staple almost since their creation and patenting by Mr. Bell in 1876, they usually are not considered legal "technology".

Using a telephone as the piece of equipment to check, route or forward communications or conduct "work" means one less item your firm needs to supply, maintain or explain to each new hire. Additionally, using a telephone removes the need to be "webby" or "techie" for end users as most staff are quite comfortable with this basic piece of office equipment.

Caution should be taken of any free calling service and end users truly need to beware of peer to peer networks as issues with overall collection of data, security and call quality are reported. Even large and slickly marketed VoIP services have growing reports of poor customer service, call quality and now difficulty terminating service. Remember, VoIP is an alternative to a traditional land line, not an equal!

Productive uses for any telephone include:

Long distance learning Long distance learning is a great option for those who work from home offices or those in remote locations who do not wish to travel hours to get to a "live" class. In many instances, classes offered through established associations provide CLE credit, making for an easy process for you to keep your practice and CLE credits up to date. ;)

Considerations - Take your "conference" to the "conference room" and ask others to attend and learn with you. They may not get the CLE credit but will still get an education.

Communication Management Pairing unified messaging with a cell phone gives unlimited flexibility for controlling the deluge of information received each day. Unified messaging provides a digital number which can be forwarded to a cell, home or other existing line or phone. From incoming call management, sophisticated voicemail and fax management, unified messaging is a great option for any mobile professional. Items to watch: available forwarding minutes and per page limits on incoming faxes.

Dial In Dictation For over a decade doctors and hospitals have used simple dial in dictation to process critical patient reports and administrative/insurance forms. Boosting Your Credit Score To Get The Best Credit Card Deal

Making Your Credit Rating Work For You

One of the basics of getting the most competitive credit card
deal in the market is to ensure you have the best credit record
possible. Few of us are lucky enough to be earning a six-figure
salary, and many people are likely to have other financial
undertakings that a potential lender will want to take into
account. None of this, however, should preclude you from
getting a top bracket credit rating. Getting a credit score of
700+ may be beyond some consumers, but lifting your credit
rating to a point at which lenders will furnish you with some
of their best deals is not an insurmountable task.

It can be a stressful time applying for a new line of credit.
Many consumers get upset when applying for a new credit card
when they find out their credit score is low, and they have
poor credit.

A lower credit score can impact the amount of money that
financial institutions will lend you. It can also impact on the
rate of interest at which you borrow. In some cases, the
difference between having an excellent credit rating and a poor
one could be getting a 0% deal on your credit card, and paying
an APR that touches 30%. Sometimes financial institutions won’t
even lend you a dime, based on a low credit score.

A variety of factors can impact on your credit score. Generally
speaking, lenders love stability more than anything else. Paying
amounts owed on time is but one of many variables. It could be
that you’ve lived in more than one address over the preceding
three years; or having borrowings with a variety of
institutions. It could even be down to the fact that you’ve got
too much credit already at your disposal.

But just what goes into your credit score? A report by the
analytics experts Fair Issac recently broke credit scoring down
into five categories and assessed their importance on the final
rating.

Most important was how you had paid you bills in the past with
the most emphasis on recent activity. Naturally, paying all
your bills on time is good; paying them consistently late is
bad. Having accounts that were sent to collection agencies is
even worse, though nowhere near as bad as declaring bankruptcy.
Paying your bills in a timely and consistent manner contributed
to 35 percent of the score.

Next most important was the amount of money you owe and the
amount of available credit at your disposal. The assessment of
outstanding debt fell into several categories, and included
credit cards, car loans, mortgages, home equity lines, and so
on. Also given consideration was the total amount of credit
available. If a customer has 10 credit cards that each have
$10,000 credit limits, that totals $100,000 of available
credit. Generally speaking, people who have a lot of credit
available tend to use it. This makes them a less attractive
credit risk. This amounts to 30 per cent of the total credit
score.

Also impacting on credit scores is the length of credit history
(15 percent). The longer a customer has had credit –
particularly if it's with the same financial institution – the
more points they get.

The mix of credit contributes 10 percent to the credit score.
Customers with the best scores have a mix of both revolving
credit, such as credit cards, and installment credit, such as
mortgages and car loans. Statistically, consumers with a richer
variety of experiences are better credit risks. As far as banks
and credit card companies are concerned, they know how to
handle money.

The last important factor taken into consideration is new
credit applications (10 percent). If you’ve applied for several
lines of credit in the past few months this will negatively
impact your credit score.

The antidotes to this are simple. Pay your bills in a timely
manner, particularly in the months leading up to an
application. Close unused retail store cards, credit cards and
old bank accounts with overdraft facilities. Maintain
long-standing and healthy arrangements with banks and other
lenders. Don’t apply for a stack of credit cards, loans and so
on, unless you’re absolutely sure it’s the right product for
you. It goes without saying that you shouldn’t apply for a
credit line unless you use it.

There’s a sixth factor that can contribute enormously to a
negative credit rating. In 2001 it became possible for
customers to get their own credit score in exchange for a small
fee. In the past, prospective lenders were able to keep this
score hidden, and many unscrupulous institutions used this
knowledge to charge a higher APR on credit. By being aware of
your credit score lenders can't lie and say your score was low
and charge higher APR on your credit card.

More importantly, it’s vital that you get rid of black marks on
your credit rating. Errors unfortunately happen all the time,
and erroneous reports of missed payments, referrals to debt
collectors and even bankruptcies can scupper your chances of
getting a low rate of interest and even a credit card
altogether. Query everything and haggle with credit reference
agencies so that only the information that is listed on your
credit history that should be there, is there.

You can find out your credit history by applying to one of
several companies. Many offer an online service and can furnish
you with the information both quickly and cheaply. Equifax,
Truecredit and Consumerinfo are some of the best such
providers.

Patience is the key to getting a great credit score – and the
best credit deals. You’re never going to make the jump from
having a credit score of 500 to one of 700 overnight, but by
implementing easy to follow and practical strategies, you can
quite easily leverage your credit score to a rating that is
respected by all concerned.

Ever Wonder How Credit Cards Are Made? - Manufacturing Credit Cards: Materials And Processes

The credit card is made of many plastic layers, laminated together. The center is commonly made from a plastic resin known as polyvinyl chloride acetate (PVCA). This resin is then mixed with other materials, such as dyes and plasticizers to give it the appropriate look and feel.

A variety of inks or dyes, in various colors, are also used for printing credit cards. These inks and dyes are especially made for use on plastic. Special magnetic ink is also available to print the magnetic stripe (magstripe) on the rear side of the card. The inks are made by dispersing metal oxide particles in the appropriate solvents. Card issuers, such as VISA, which have their own holograms, use additional special printing processes which are involved for cards, like VISA, with featured holograms.

The manufacturing of the credit card takes place in the following steps:

1. Plastic compounding and molding: The plastic for the core sheet is made my melting PVCA with other materials. This molten mixture is put in the appropriate molding equipment, and is flattened to the right thickness by passing it through rollers. This sheet is then allowed to cool down.

2. Printing: Each card sheet is then printed with text as well as graphics. Silk screening and magnetic ink printing are the processes used. The magnetic strip can also be created using hot stamping. Magnetic heads are used to code and decode the iron particles in the strip, so that relevant information can be stored in them. However, the magnetic particles can only be useful if they are on the surface of the card, therefore this step is performed after the lamination.

3. Lamination: Essentially, lamination protects the card, and improves its strength. Lamination is done on both sides of the card.

4. Cutting and Embossing: After lamination, each sheet is cut into a set of cards. Each sheet gives a yield of around 63 cards. The sheet is first cut into seven sections longitudinally, and then each of the seven sections is cut into nine cards. Each card is now a separate credit card, and will be embossed with account numbers, and other information. The cards are now ready for shipment to the cardholders! Each card has to be of the premium quality. Customers cannot be given cards which will break or be damaged after a certain period of time. Key quality issues are linked with the compounding of plastic and color matching of the inks. The American National Standards Institute has a standard for plastic raw materials (ANSI specification x4.16-1973). Ingredients have to be correctly weighed, mixed and blended under the proper temperatures and other manufacturing conditions. Similarly, the molding process must be scrutinized to avoid flaws and defects, which could cause the cards to crack or rupture. The final quality check is to make sure the right numbers are stamped on the cards through the embossing process.

The many evolving technologies in this area will help create the credit cards with better quality and make them more cost effective in terms of manufacturing. New generations of credit cards might carry integrated computer chips, containing a variety of valuable information, making the card more useful, as well as secure.

Minimum Credit Card Payments To Rise

For years, major credit card companies have allowed cardholders
to make minimum payments of 2% of the outstanding balances on
their credit cards. Having customers pay the minimum doesn’t
reduce the balance by very much, but when the 18-30% interest
rates that many credit cards charge is applied, the result is a
profitable ones for the banks that issue credit cards. A balance
of $1000 can take nine years to pay off at 20% interest if the
borrower only pays the minimum due each month.

Clearly, it is not in the best interests of consumers to pay
the minimum every month. But tens of thousands of Americans do
just that, carrying huge balances and paying the minimum every
month. The average household now carries $10,000 in credit card
debt; for many people, paying the minimum is all they can
manage. Due to changes in Federal law, several major credit
card issuing banks will soon raise the minimum amount due to
4%. This might seem like a small increase, but if you are
already deep in debt and paying the minimum amount, this could
cause your payments to double. If you have a $10,000 balance
and you are paying $200 per month, you will soon need to come
up with $400 instead. Many people will find this impossible to
do, as they are already paying as much as they can. What
solutions are available?

The usual common sense rules of credit card use apply here.
Stop using your credit cards. See if you can consolidate your
debt on another credit card with lower interest. See if you can
cut out some unnecessary expenses in order to free up some more
money to pay your balance. Consider a home equity loan to
consolidate your debt. Call your card issuing bank and see if
they can work out repayment plan or lower your interest rate.
There are numerous solutions available, but card holders need
to be aware that the minimum payment is rising, and it isn’t
going to come back down. By charging a 4% minimum, the credit
card issuing banks are hoping that consumers will pay off their
debt a bit sooner and that fewer consumers will find themselves
in a situation where filing for bankruptcy is the only
solution. And once October comes around, even filing for
bankruptcy will be more difficult. Credit card holders with
large balances on their accounts should give considerable
thought to reducing their debt now, as payment options and
requirements are going to be more strict from now on.

Although telephones have been a law firm staple almost since their creation and patenting by Mr. Bell in 1876, they usually are not considered legal "technology".

For a small business the cost of a phone system can seem disproportionate to its advantages. But not having one can make a business seem less professional and, worse still, can lead to lost business from inefficient handling of calls.

The same dilemma faces a small business start-up, which these days can often mean working from home. One of the first considerations is what phone number to use in order to effectively handle phone calls. Four options immediately become apparent: Use a mobile cell phone for business but risk not seeming professional. Immediately stand the cost of an extra business phone line. This is how it works. Most virtual switchboard operators in the UK provide a free non-geographic phone number with a 08 prefix. When someone calls your 08 number, the call will route through the phone company's switch and it this that does all the clever work.

The caller hears an announcement that says something like "Please hold whilst we connect your call". Simultaneously your home phone will ring. When you pick it up you'll hear an announcement such as "You have a call for the sales department. Please press any key to accept". This is how you know it is a business call. Virtual Switchboards all have voicemail and most will also send voicemail messages to your email inbox as voice file attachments that you can listen to on your computer.

Receive Notification Of Failed Calls

Some virtual switchboards also have a very useful feature whereby, if a caller hangs up without leaving a message, you'll receive an email with the caller's phone number so you can call back. In fact, with a virtual switchboard you need never miss another call.

Track Advertising Response

It isn't just business start ups that can benefit from a virtual switchboard. It never ceases to amaze how many established businesses pay for expensive advertising then fail to answer every call. Just call a few tradesmen out of Yellow Pages and notice how many don’t answer. In fact a recent survey by TagMe found that a sample of their customers was losing hundreds of thousands of pounds in missed calls.

This is a situation where a virtual switchboard can easily track advertising response. By placing a different 08 phone number into each advert, calls can be tracked in two ways. First, when answering a call it can be announced, as described above, by the name of the source that generated the enquiry. Second, by referring to the call statistics made available by most virtual switchboard operators. This means you can easily verify which adverts produce an acceptable level of response and which do not.

Record Conversations

There are many situations when a recording of a phone conversation can be of immense value either as a training aid or to resolve disputes about precisely what was said. Some credit card companies now require merchants to record all credit card transactions that are made by phone. But to record conversations requires a capital expenditure on specialised recording equipment. However, many virtual switchboard operators offer a call recording facility as well.

Call Handling Versatility

A virtual switchboard can be used for your main business phone number or as a way to easily obtain additional phone numbers for other purposes such as marketing, customer services or support. If you change to a different outsource company, it is a matter of moments to reroute calls to a new one.

All in all a virtual switchboard can be of enormous value to businesses of all sizes in all sorts of situations that require calls to be handled effectively.
